The Student Government Association hosted a Leadership Luncheon at JA, inviting student government executive boards from surrounding independent schools and universities. Student leaders from Hartfield Academy, Jackson Prep, Madison-Ridgeland Academy, Mississippi College, Mississippi State, and The University of Mississippi attended.
During a panel discussion, the college students shared advice with the high school students. Then, the leaders went to each table of students for further discussion. Leaders and advisors collaborated, discussed experiences, and learned more about high school and college leadership roles.
“Thinking about college when you’re in high school can be overwhelming, so I think it was a great opportunity for students to see how their leadership skills and involvement can translate into their collegiate experience,” said Mississippi State’s Student Body President Ellie Herndon. “I hope this event continues for students to come!”
There was nothing but positive feedback from all leaders. High school students enjoyed the valuable insight the collegiate leaders gave, talking about leadership throughout multiple phases of life. The college leaders left campus greatly encouraged for the future of education and leadership in our state.
“While a major purpose of education is ensuring students learn skills and content, it is important to recognize that schools also have the task of developing students as individuals, in both implicit and explicit ways,” said SGA sponsor Austin Fortenberry. “This event was one of many that was purposed toward developing students into strong leaders, collaborative individuals, and thoughtful community members.”
Advisors left the luncheon feeling encouraged by the collaborative efforts among students to become better leaders and better people, too. Students from different schools often meet under competitive circumstances, so seeing them come together for a shared purpose was nice.
